This sleek thriller, adapted from Patricia Highsmith's novel, is set in Greece and Istanbul in 1962. Intrigue begins at the Parthenon, when wealthy, handsome American tourist Chester MacFarland and his young wife Collete meet American expat Rydal, a scammer working as a tour guide. Instead of becoming his latest marks, the two befriend him, but a murder at the couple's hotel puts all three on the run together and creates a precarious bond between them as the trio's allegiance is put to the test.
Some 15 years after The Talented Mr Ripley (dir. Anthony Minghella) arrived on cinema screens, this latest Highsmith adaptation delivers exactly what we hope and expect from her misanthropic and suspenseful world, as the themes of avarice, greed, manipulation and duplicity unfurl in this potent package. The Two Faces of January is taut, playful and very seductive.
'Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst enliven a good-looking adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel.' Mark Kermode, Observer
